Encompassing 13 categories from ‘Best Facebook Page’ and ‘Best Use of Humour in Social Media’, the awards are meant to honour work in Western Canada and the United States that went live on-line between June 2011 and March 2012.

Nominations for the Coasties close at noon on Friday, April 27, 2012. The public will be invited to vote for their favourites from Monday, April 30, 2012 to Friday, May 11, 2012.

“We decided that the only way to narrow down the nominees was to let the public decide what campaigns resonated with them,” said Chris Burdge, co-organizer for Social Media Camp. “We are thrilled to have social media heavy hitters judging the Coasties this year. The panel adds a lot of credibility to the awards.”

Up to five campaigns will be short-listed in each category with final award decisions made by an all-star social media judging panel that includes:

Jay Baer, author of the NOW Revolution along with co-author;

Sean Moffitt, co-author and managing director of Wikibrands;

Raul Pacheco-Vega, Vancouver-based researcher, educator and consultant also known on-line by the moniker Hummingbird604; and

Simon Salt, founder and CEO of International IncSlingers and author ofSocial Location Marketing

And two additional judges to be announced soon.

The only award that won’t go to the judging panel is ‘The Koolest Use of Social Media,‘ which will be judged entirely by the public as a listener’s choice award coordinated by Victoria, BC radio station 107.3 KOOL FM.

On Friday, June 8, 2012, the award winners will be revealed at an evening event moderated by former rock and roll TV host turned digital publisher, Erica Ehm. The second annual West Coast Social Media Awards are held in conjunction with Social Media Camp, one of the leading social media learning events in North America.

My name is Brennan Storr and I’m a freelance writer based out of Victoria. A little over a year ago I was up for two West Coast Social Media Awards: “Best Blog” for my travel and lifestyle site Largely the Truth and “Funniest Tweet” for some joke I’d made on Twitter about walking around downtown Victoria at night.

I pushed hard for best blog – George McGovern at the Miami Convention-hard – and more or less forgot about my Twitter nomination; mostly because a great deal of time and effort goes into my blog posts whereas I regard my tweets as you might cigarette butts. When the votes were counted, despite (or perhaps because of, if my Catholic grandmother is to be believed) my stuffing the ballot box more than a 15-year-old does his trousers “Best Blog” went to Culture Vulture Victoria and I won the award which I had ignored entirely except to vote for someone else.

Standing in front of the crowd at the Victoria Convention Centre on awards night I was struck by a funny notion – as much as I disdained Twitter it was the only reason I’d had the opportunity to stand in front of a crowd and accept something without a stern voice saying, “the jury is dismissed” afterward. Taking that thought further, it’s not a stretch to say that social media is the only reason my site has the readership it does. That realization makes the Westie on my shelf mean a whole lot more.

If you’re looking to increase the readership on your site, expand your social media skills or just network with other people enthusiastic to get their message out there then check out this year’s Social Media Camp.

Since I work from home, I am on social media ALL THE TIME. My name is Yukari Peerless and I am aware that some people consider me an over-share in social media.

So for me, it was extremely humbling to receive a Coastie award last year. Wow! Soon it’ll be a year since I won the Coastie for Most Likely to Become a Social Media Celebrity at Victoria’s 2011 Social Media Camp! The award is proudly sitting right in front of my desk, a place where I see it every day.

Since winning the Coastie, I have been chosen to be the Brand Ambassador for All Nippon Airways (ANA)’s Inspiration of Japan service. In fact, I just got back from a trip to Japan with some real social media celebrities like Neal Schaffer, Cali Lewis and John Pozadzides.

I wear many, many hats. I write a blog at yukaripeerless.ca. I’m the owner of Lucid Communication. I’m a busy single mom of two boys. I am one of the co-founders of Breathe Now—a conference to celebrate women, coming up on April 14th and 15th, 2012. Additionally, I am a co-host of the YouTube show, Getting Engaged-Online, In Life, and At Work. My “Social Media Husband,” Russel Lolacher and I have been doing the show for about a year and a half.

Lucid Communication, among other services, helps Japanese international students find language schools and place to live. I offer Japanese/English translation. I plan events such as weddings for people coming to Victoria to get married. I’m a production assistant for Japanese TV/Film crews coming to BC.

The pleasant surprise that came with this award was being able to connect with Sean Moffitt, who is one of the judges from last year. I had no idea that the judges were monitoring my—I’m assuming—my Twitter account. He was very kind to tell me that he liked what he saw. Of course, I am not on social media to sell something or to get a good score per se, but still, it was very kind of him to mention that. We’ve been good friends ever since and catching up over FB chat has become our routine.

Thank you Coastie for the honor, and best of luck to all the nominees for 2012! I can’t wait to see you all at Social Media Camp.

I (Dane Low) am the Digital Communications Manager at Cactus Club Cafe head office. We are still over the moon about winning the “Best Use of Social Media for Customer Service” award last year.

From the beginning, Cactus Club’s mission statement has been “Every Guest Leaves Happy” and that mission has been maintained as its priority in the social space. To be recognized at the West Coast Social Media Awards was an honor and a testament to our commitment to that mission.

How did the competition work?
The competition worked by first collecting nominations. It was funny how I found out how Cactus Club was nominated: I clicked a link on a friend’s profile, who was also nominated, and was casually viewing the list of other nominees. I did a double-take when I saw my name listed as well. The next step was being short-listed by online voting. For this portion of the process, you definitely need an engaged and passionate community to support you and your business.

Finally, each short listed nominee was reviewed by a panel of 5 judges. There were some exceptional nominees, so the judges’ decisions could not have been easy! One cool aspect about the judging process is that they included the Keynote speaker, Scott Stratten of UnMarketing fame, on the panel (It’s always nice to get a hat-tip from a recognized expert in the industry).

What was the conference like?
The conference was a fantastic two day event at the Victoria Conference Center. It had great content for people who are just beginning to explore social opportunities as well as more advanced topics for those who have been at it for a while. Additionally, the event attracted many of the most influential people in the social media space on the West Coast, so it made for a valuable networking event. I had the pleasure of meeting and catching up with many people who I consider to be leaders in the industry.

I highly recommend that everyone try to make it out this year for Social Media Camp 2012!
